Elois Cobbins' trip to Africa
Elois Cobbins retired from driving buses for the DART system in Dallas in October 2003. The Bedford Family Website was finally able to catch up with her to drill for information on her trip to Africa. Here is the interview:
Bedford Family Website: Where did you go?
Elois Cobbins: Nigeria, Lagos, and Abuja.
Bedford Family Website: Whom did you go with?
Elois Cobbins: I went with the Living Hope Ministry. It was a mission connected to the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church in Dallas.
Bedford Family Website: Why did you go?
Elois Cobbins: To assist in dispensing medicine to sick people who do not have access to such health care.
Bedford Family Website: How did you get there?
Elois Cobbins: I flew from Dallas to London, then on to Nigeria. I then took a short road trip in a bus to the mission. It was about a 15-hour trip.
Bedford Family Website: Where did you stay?
Elois Cobbins: We stayed with Dr. Sunny Acho. He is a native Nigerian who is also a doctor in Dallas.
Bedford Family Website: How long were you there?
Elois Cobbins: I was there for 14 days.
Bedford Family Website: What were some of the different things you noticed?
Elois Cobbins: It was really something to see how poor the people were. They seem to have an ancient existence. The village people live in straw huts. The hospitals did not have hot and cold running water or electricity. While there, armed guards always escorted us. There is a lot of crime, which is one of the reasons for the guards. We had servants who would provide us with food. The weather had a comfortable breeze and was around 75º, even when it would rain.
I think slavery in America was a horrible thing. However, if there was any benefit from it, I think it would be the way American Blacks live compared to Africans. There is so much that this entire country takes for granted. There are only two social classes in Africa, rich or poor, with most being poor.
Bedford Family Website: Would you do this again?
Elois Cobbins: Yes. In fact, I hope to make another trip to a different country next year.
Bedford Family Website: Do you have any pictures?
Elois Cobbins: I sure do. Just click here to go to my picture book.
